Via Fox News: Trump vows to protect Army-Navy game from ‘Big TV Money’ interference with executive order.
President Donald Trump said Saturday that he plans to sign an executive order protecting the broadcast slot for the Army-Navy football game.
Trump’s announcement on Truth Social comes amid a push to expand the NCAA College Football Playoff, which could potentially affect the Army-Navy game’s traditional time slot.
“The Army-Navy Game is one of our Greatest American Traditions — Unmatched Patriotism, Courage, and Honor!” Trump wrote. “This incredible Tradition is now at risk of being pushed aside by more College Playoff Games, and Big TV Money. NOT ANYMORE!”
[…]
“Under my Administration, the second Saturday in December belongs to Army-Navy, and ONLY Army-Navy!” Trump said. “I will soon sign a Historic Executive Order securing an EXCLUSIVE 4 hour Broadcast window, so this National Event stands above Commercial Postseason Games. No other Game or Team can violate this Time Slot!!!”
My snarky thought, as per the headline of the post, is that I am old enough to remember when the Republican Party was allegedly the pro-business, pro-market party. Kind of like how they claimed to be the party of “law and order” or, even better, of “limited government.”
On one level, this is all quite trivial and certainly far down the list of the sins of this administration.
On another, this isn’t just some trivial matter. This is the President of the United State asserting the right to dictate the decisions of American television network and acting more like a monarch than an elected leader. There is also the added patina of faux patriotism (of the militarized variety).
“We must protect the Tradition, and the Players, who protect us,” he added.
He actually thinks of himself as a monarch who can just order things to happen.
Unfortunately, lots of organizations and plutocrats are willing perhaps eager to indulge his fantasies.
The eternal, unchanging conservative principles are carved in stone. Just don’t try nailing that slab of stone to the wall. “…updated daily.”
@charontwo:
I have to ask: What’s in it for those organizations and plutocrats?
The Air Force Academy Falcons have a 37-21-1 record versus Army in football and a 32-23 record versus Navy football.
Trump should give these rivalries the same attention since it goes back to the Revolutionary War when the Continental Army took over all the airports.
1) Having the game on the second Saturday is a relatively recent thing. It used to be a week earlier, but that weekend is now conference championship games.
2) The NCAA sold its bowl games and the football championship games to ESPN. ESPN is not a broadcast network.
How does a “Historic Executive Order” differ from a regular “Executive Order?” Word salad.
I’m sure that ‘Originalists’ believe that the Founding Fathers intended that the country be governed by a never ending series of Executive Orders (especially Historic Executive Orders) thus obviating the need for Congress altogether. Am I wrong?
