Bonus Geeks!

Our first bonus ep: Superman!

Note: Part II of our discussion of Andor drops tomorrow!

Steven and Tom rushed to the movie theater, saw the new Superman movie, and now present their reviews! There’s a spoiler-free section in the first part, followed by spoilers galore in the second, so listen carefully for the transition.

Thrill as we give our opinions of how well this movie captures the essential Superman! Gasp as we disagree over how much we liked the movie! Hear how we compare James Gunn’s Superman to the 1979 Christopher Reeve classic, as well as other movie and TV portrayals!

Ancient Geeks is a podcast about two geeks of a certain age re-visiting their youth. We were there when things like science fiction, fantasy, Tolkien, Star Trek, Star Wars, D&D, Marvel and DC comics, Doctor Who, and many, many other threads of modern geek culture were still on the fringes of culture. We were geeks before it was chic!

I went though it during the first half of today’s cooking. I think I liked the movie more than the AG hosts, but maybe not. My standard for recent movies is: would I want to see this movie again? In this case, no. In the case of the first Wonder Woman film, I’ve seen it twice more. So….

One thing of note I can add is now and then the soundtrack plays a few bars of the John Williams 1970s Superman theme. I don’t know enough about music to describe it more precisely. I’m sure I wouldn’t have noticed, had not one review I read mentioned it.

And I missed the in-credits and post-credit scenes.

I assume spoilers are ok in this thread, nevertheless I’ll indicate:

    SPOILER ALERT!

    You’ve been warned.

I’m a bit more forgiving of Eve. That is, I can rationalize that she figured out how to spy on Jeff Luthor (what?) without him catching on. And held on to the info she gathered until she needed to trade it for her life.

I say this because she tells Jimmy she had info, and sends all the selfies and only the selfies.

Yes, she’s the ditzy blonde, but she outsmarted Luthor, didn’t she? Maybe that says more about Luthor’s position on the Dunning-Kruger scale.

    Two more things:

While superhero fantasy is, well, obviously completely unrealistic, it always feel more reasonable to me if the protagonist, when there is one, has help from other superheroes. So I did like having Hawkgirl, Mr. Terrific*, and Guy Gardner along for the movie

    Second:

    SPOILER ALERT!!

On Hawkgirl dropping the fictional president, it was totally against the superhero ethos. However, as he looked, and acted, like the secret love child of El Taco and Mad Vlad, I can’t say I minded it.

I kind fo expected he’d wind up dead. I thought it would be more accidental or stupid. Like he makes Hawkgirl drop him. or maybe Jeff Luthor kills him for some other reason.

I have yet to see the movie–hopefully this coming weekend. In the meantime, I just discovered that if you have a premium Spotify Account, there is an official full-cast audio adaptation of Morrison and Quitely’s All Star Superman:
    https://open.spotify.com/show/7dLvJBLRVeclItK54Us7ba?si=3c25e5222380469d

You might also have access to it on Audible, I haven’t checked yet.
