His main areas of expertise include parties, elections, and the institutional design of democracies. His most recent book is the co-authored A Different Democracy: American Government in a 31-Country Perspective. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Texas and his BA from the University of California, Irvine. He has been blogging since 2003 (originally at the now defunct Poliblog).     While I agree, it’s still a weird analogy. If I’m to come up with a right-wing figure who has had the biggest negative impact on our culture, my first thought would be Rush Limbaugh, and for someone still alive, Tucker Carlson maybe. The late 31-year-old was a babe in the woods.

    And even then, it still seems a stretch to measure any of those people against a pure show-biz figure. On our side, if I was to think of a political figure with a big cultural impact, the one that immediately springs to my mind is Jon Stewart. But I would never compare his impact to that of, say, Tom Hanks.
