    This song is so great–you can never have enough cowbell (cf “Mississippi Queen” and “We’re An American Band”)–but the best on that album was “Whiskey Bottle”.

    The following story will simultaneously bring tears to the eyes of lead vocalist Jay Farrar’s admirers, and make his detractors throw up in their mouths a little: I saw Son Volt (the band he formed after Uncle Tupelo broke up) in Houston circa 1998. When they played their signature song, the wistful yet anthemic “Windfall”, nearly the entire audience sang the song with them.
