Registration Requirement Enabled

As promised.

As announced on Saturday, we have turned on a setting requiring site registration to be able to comment. Currently, there are no comments in moderation, but we’ll keep a more frequent eye on it for the next couple of days as the glitches work out.

Let us know if you have issues.

    Thanks James, one suggestion. It would be helpful to have a “Login” link somewhere on the page – perhaps the header? I happen to use WordPress for another site so I know the syntax of the login URL and was able to guess it, but others might not be in that position.

    People can click on “Register”, but that didn’t *register* with me this morning.

    I can not find a Log In key on the OTB Homepage.
    I have been clicking on Register that takes me to WordPress where I log in.
    After several more clicks I get to OTB and see the
    Wordpress Outside the Beltway…Howdy… banner at the top of the page.
    I don’t mind doing this. Just checking if this is the standard routine to log in to OTB.

    @Gregory Lawrence Brown: Thanks for the reminder. I’ve added a Login link next to the Register link.

    I see it!

    When I tried to post using a fake e-mail address, it would not do so. I was able to post using my real e-mail, though it went into moderation.

  8. Kathy says:

    I managed to log in successfully in my home PC, work PC, and both phones. Somehow all four had remembered the password.

    So I’m not going anywhere.

  9. Matt Bernius says:

    Update: There is now a link in the sidebar (on the desktop version) to log in/register. I need to figure out where it’s showing up in the mobile version.

  10. Erik says:

    @Matt Bernius: It was at the bottom of the page for me

    ETA: no moderation but I got a double post. That’s never happened to me before

    Log in fields are at the bottom of the page on my iPhone.

    @James Joyner:

    Thanks for the reminder. I’ve added a Login link next to the Register link.

    It doesn’t show up on mobile. As noted to Matt yesterday, on mobile you currently need scroll to the bottom of the page and look at the page footer and click the regisration link to log in.

    Also, it might be useful to modify the current commenting window so it has a login link, or have the comment box hidden and replaced with a login link for anyone not logged in.

    @Matt Bernius:

    Ah, I see the sidebar you added in mobile now. It’s about 2/3 of the way down the page though.

    @Andy and others:
    Thanks for the feedback on the placement on mobile. I’m prioritizing finding a place for it higher up on the screen. Ultimately, I’ll also try to update the commenting area for ease of use. But that won’t happen until later this week as I’m up against a few deadlines.

    I see a box to check next to the Register/Log in fields that says Remember Me. The only time that I have ever checked a similar box is on my Kroger account. It says: “Keep me signed in. Checking this box will reduce the number of times we’ll ask you to sign in.
    To keep your account secure, use this option only on your personal device.”
    It doesn’t seem to remember anything. I have to fill in Username and Password every time I log in to that site. I don’t want my Bank Accounts or Credit Card accounts to remember anything. I may be kidding myself but I have this idea that if those accounts don’t remember me and I must enter Username and Password each time that I visit those sites it is somehow more secure.
    So what will my OTB account Remember if I check that box?
    Username-Email address-password?

    lol
    England win by a very tight margin.
    India only needed another 22 runs to win when Engalnd took the last wicket.
    A real nailbiter of a last innings.

  22. Very odd behavior on my end. Usually use Google on my phone, but no check box this am (hence my very late wishes on Cracker’s natal day), and no opportunity to try login. When I pulled up yesterday’s email with registration notes, it took me to Edge for login, where the ‘Howdy!’ greeted me.

    Now 8 hours later, I have a registration/login button at the very bottom of the mobile screen.

    Thanks for all your efforts on this, team! So far, I’m not missing the ‘hsssssss’ of various trolls sucking all the air out of the room.
