‘Psychologically tortured’: California city pays man nearly $1m after 17-hour police interrogation

It’s downright horrific and I would have to quote the whole article to give a glimpse of what the poor man went thru. Instead, I’ll just quote…

    The judge:

“[Perez] was berated, worn down, and pressured into a false confession after 17 hours of questioning. [The officers] did this with full awareness of his compromised mental and physical state and need for his medications,” the judge wrote. “[The officers’] conduct impacted Perez so greatly that he falsely confessed to murdering his father and attempted to commit suicide in the station.”

    His lawyer:

“Between mentally torturing a false confession out of Tom Perez, concealing from him that his father was alive and well, and confining him in the psych ward because they made him suicidal, in my 40 years of suing the police I have never seen that level of deliberate cruelty by the police,” Steering said in a statement.

In an interview, the lawyer said watching the footage laid bare how officers can force people to make false confessions: “This case shows that if the police are skilled enough, and they grill you hard enough, they can get anybody to confess to anything.”

Singer Sean Kingston and his mother charged for over $1m fraud

Specific details of Kingston’s and Turner’s alleged crimes are not included in the warrants, but the documents say that from October to March they stole almost $500,000 in jewelry, more than $200,000 from Bank of America, $160,000 from the Escalade dealer, more than $100,000 from First Republic Bank, $86,000 from the maker of customized beds and other smaller amounts.

Kingston, whose legal name is Kisean Anderson, was already on two years’ probation for trafficking stolen property. Further information on that conviction could not be found. According to federal court records, his mother pleaded guilty in 2006 to bank fraud for stealing over $160,000 and served nearly 18 months in prison.

The two have also been sued.

In 2015, a seller of customized watches successfully sued Kingston and his mother in a New York City federal court for $356,000 after they failed to pay. In 2018, a New York jeweler successfully sued the two for $301,000 after they scammed the store out of nine items. More recently, a Florida entertainment systems company sued Kingston in February, saying he failed to pay $120,000 of a $150,000 bill for a 232-inch (5.8 meter) television installed in his home. The TV is approximately 17 ft by 9.5 ft (5 meters by 3 meters) and covers a wall.

    No doubt trump idolizes them.

BTW, this happened in 2018, approximately two years before the BLM protests.

Some more info on the Singapore Airlines incident from Sylvia Wrigley.

I find it interesting that it may not have been sudden clear air turbulence. This is why there is an investigation.

There’s also a link to an NTSB study on the matter of turbulence injuries. About one fifth involve passengers, the rest are cabin crew. More salient, of the passengers injured, most did not have their seat belts on (you can find this in page 45 of the study)

In brief, most severe turbulence incidents take place on descent or approach (but not all), cabin crew are more at risk than passengers, and passengers with seat belts on had the fewest injuries.

All this flag waving strikes me as simply performative. I’d bet more than half these people never even stood a watch. The larger issue, as one commenter said, is that MAGA has hijacked Old Glory for its own symbolism, much as they perniciously appropriated the word “patriot.” Displaying the flag has become an act of defiance more than any gesture of inward national pride.

Of course, it’s the “libtards” who are causing all the trouble…

@Stormy Dragon: Actually, I read that differently. The reason to not wear your government uniform is to not imply that your participation is specifically government-sanctioned (or mandated). BUT, in this case, participation was an activity in accordance with a federally-declared Special Emphasis Month, which sure sounds government-sanctioned to me.

The message “we support LGBTQ+ Pride, but don’t want to publicize that fact” is not a very good look, though I certainly understand the desire to avoid having the Pharisees lose their sh!t over it.

That can’t possibly be right. What about the many players and coaches who demand to hold very ostentatious prayers at midfield? They can’t be wrong about that.

If you don’t show off, who’s going to know? What, is there some kind of omniscient being somewhere who knows and sees all? And if there is, unless it will act as your publicist, who cares?

    Matthew 6:5-6

5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly

Here is a Reuters item about Trump at Libertarian Convention. My internet connection at home is through my iPhone Personal Hotspot. It works however sometimes it is very slow.
I don’t see any video in the Reuters piece but there is a still shot of some people in a fist fight on the convention floor.

When Trump took to the stage in Washington, there were loud boos and jeers. A smaller section of the crowd, Trump supporters, cheered him.
Shortly before he appeared, one Libertarian Party member shouted: “Donald Trump should have taken a bullet!”
Trump’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the hostile reception.
