His main areas of expertise include parties, elections, and the institutional design of democracies. His most recent book is the co-authored A Different Democracy: American Government in a 31-Country Perspective. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Texas and his BA from the University of California, Irvine. He has been blogging since 2003 (originally at the now defunct Poliblog).     OK, I’m against Sharia. I think religion should be kept separate from the workings of government, and government should not be a tool to enforce religious edicts. But I don’t think that is what is meant by Texas MAGA politicians running against Sharia. I suspect they use it to mean boogeyman coming to take your privileges. The largest ethnic group in Texas is Hispanic, and the largest religious group are Catholics. About 25% of Texans are White and Protestant (half fundamentalists and half main line.) The fervor of Christian Nationalism (or Texasism) is probably driven by consciousness of minority status and concern about future demographics.
