Steven L. Taylor is a Professor Emeritus of Political Science and former College of Arts and Sciences Dean. His main areas of expertise include parties, elections, and the institutional design of democracies. His most recent book is the co-authored A Different Democracy: American Government in a 31-Country Perspective. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Texas and his BA from the University of California, Irvine. He has been blogging since 2003 (originally at the now defunct Poliblog).

@Flat Earth Luddite: Interesting you find the photo “strangely hopeful.” Probably because of where my outlook has been for many years (at least since 2016) all of Dr. Taylor’s dark sky photos make me think I’m looking toward Mordor.
If I were being flippant, I’d quote my great uncles (WW1 vets) who used to tell our churchy neighbors that they’d been to hell, and didn’t believe in heaven.
But after prison, long-standing depression, cancer (& chemo & aftermath), Mordor on earth doesn’t worry me as much as it perhaps should. Instead, I’ll keep walking towards the light…one step at a time.
