Bovino Out of Minneapolis

And maybe out entirely.

The Atlantic reports: Greg Bovino Loses His Job.

Gregory Bovino has been removed from his role as Border Patrol “commander at large” and will return to his former job in El Centro, California, where he is expected to retire soon, according to a DHS official and two people with knowledge of the change.

May it be so.

Bovino’s sudden demotion is the clearest sign yet that the Trump administration is reconsidering its most aggressive tactics after the killing Saturday of 37-year-old Alex Pretti by Border Patrol agents under Bovino’s command.

May it be so.

Given that Trump has been reticent to admit any mistakes in his second administration by removing personnel, this is a sign that the pressure is getting to the White House in the wake of the execution of Alex Pretti.

Further,

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and her close adviser Corey Lewandowski, who were Bovino’s biggest backers at DHS, are also at risk of losing their jobs, two of the people told me.

May it be so.

The bad news is Tom Homan is reportedly taking over the Minnesota operation. He has been on the same list of problematic actors as Bovino, although granted with less Nazi-esque cosplay.

Homan was, don’t forget, a contributor to Project 2025 and likes his cash in a Cava bag.

See Axios: What to know about Trump’s “border czar” sent to Minnesota.

Homan has reportedly clashed with other Trump officials over tactics. He has favored deportations for people he considers criminals and national security threats, instead of the broader approach currently sweeping Minnesota.

If accurate, this would be an improvement. But it should be stressed that Homan is hardly a dove on this topic. That he may be an improvement, if only marginally, over Noem, Lewandowski, and Bovino is likely true.

We shall see what the concrete ramifications are for Minneapolis (and future deployments) of sending Bovino packing. No doubt he will soon have a high-paying gig on cable news. I get they’ll even let him wear a uniform.

Axios is sanewashing again. Homann was responsible for the child stealing program.

Part of the reason that we are here is letting him get away with it.

  2. @Barry_D: The link right after that does note that issue. But perhaps I should have been more explicit.

Having Tom Homan replace Bovino is like changing your shirt after shitting in your pants.
