In Front of Our Noses: “I’m going to give…”

I know this is just a repeat of what he said last month, but it is worth pointing out again. It is also all the more gross to be doing this from the Oval Office instead of at a campaign event.

The personalism of it all is also quite striking: “I’m going to give…” as if he owns the government and controls the treasury. This is tin-pot dictator stuff.

I also get tired of the way he throws out numbers. Even if the $21 trillion in investments is a real number (and it almost certainly is not), it is not like this is $21 trillion that has been deposited in some account from which he can draw out the $1.2 trillion needed to dole out checks. It is like the way he talks about Venezuelan oil–it is all fantasies built out of potentiality and vapor.

It is truly remarkable to watch him run the country the way he ran his businesses: it is all bluster and managing to use other people’s money to enrich and empower himself without actually building or producing anything. Who could have predicted it?

Has anyone failed upward more successfully than Donald J. Trump?

The brazenness is certainly a key part of this, as it amounts to a naked promise of a political payoff. Theoretically, it could be done legally, so I don’t see the main problem as one of law, per se. This is not a defense, but simply capitulating to reality: if (a big “if”) Congress passed a law to “rebate” $5k to every adult citizen in the US, that is something they have the power to do. It would be unwise, if not downright stupid, to do so, but it is hard to argue that they lack the constitutional authority.

I also don’t get hung up on the legality issue, because I don’t think this is going to happen. Even if, by some miracle, the Republicans retain both chambers of Congress, such a rebate bill is not going to pass. Indeed, if the GOP had the votes to try to bribe America into loving them, now is the time, not later.

Indeed, one of the reasons that this kind of appeal is just so very stupid is that the Republicans currently control the House, the Senate, the White House, and, for all practical purposes, the Supreme Court. Sure, the filibuster still exists, but the Reps have the theoretical power to do away with it. So where are the checks? Why should we have to wait until after the election? If we are flush with that sweet, sweet tariff money, then bring on the bonuses!

If Republican governance brings us such amazing outcomes that Democrats will ruin, show us the money now!

Wait.

I am getting a note.

I am being informed that this is all a lie and a sham being offered to us by a con artist who can’t be trusted.

  1. When I read your post title I thought you were referring to the Guardian article I saw this morning regarding sending $90 to each Medicare recipient sometime this October. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/oct/03/trump-payment-seniors-medicare
    This is just so insane.

“I look forward to signing those checks!” Or Autopen? His hand will be awfully cramped up. During the Covid pandemic’s Farm to Family program the food boxes all came with a letter from Trump.

  3. Trump is not going to give you penny of his money. The funds that he might distribute already belong to you. They are US government funds. Let me repeat; he is not going to give you any of his money; at best he will send you a check from your own account.
If you make me President, I will use my power to send you money from Donald Trump’s personal account.

  4. I remember a movie, released around 1970 – The Magic Christian – the premise of which was everybody can be bought, everyone has a price.

Peter Sellers was cast as an eccentric billionaire (more relevant than ever) who is wants to prove that money influences people’s behavior. He meets a homeless man played by Ringo Starr and adopts him as his son. Sellers and Ringo proceed to play pranks on the public to see just how far people will go in pursuit of money.

The film concluded with a scene where there is a pool filled with urine and feces and Sellers throws money into the pool and dares people to take the leap, jump into the pool to get the money, and … spoiler alert … they do.

56 years later … here we are. Bring it.

If Democrats win the House and Senate, I hope they send him a bill to send $5k to each American citizen, paid for with tax hikes on the wealthy.

A special levy on the fortunes of the Trump family and administration members and “associates” (eg Kushner and Witkoff) might be an even more entertaining starting bid.

  6. Speaking about in front of our noses:

The Trump administration’s ongoing discussions with Russia to end the Ukraine war now include a multibillion-dollar oil deal that would benefit Middle Eastern business executives tied to the lead U.S. negotiators, according to new reporting from The New York Times.

U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and President Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, have been engaged in monthslong negotiations to end this four-year-long war. In September, the two men traveled to both Ukraine and Russia to reopen peace talks.

Several people with knowledge of these negotiations told the Times that Russian President Vladimir Putin introduced a substantial deal for one of Russia’s largest energy companies, Lukoil, to acquire oil fields, refineries and gas stations around the world during his Sept. 5 meeting with the U.S. negotiators.

The group behind this deal includes two Middle Eastern groups that have done business with Witkoff and Kushner, as well as American investor and Trump donor Todd Boehly.
