Remarkable Images from Yesterday

Impressive photojournalism.

As an avid amateur photographer, I couldn’t help buy be impressed with some of the photojournalism from yesterday. No politics here, just admiration for amazing work, much of which was in the midst of/in the aftermath of, a shooting in which the reporters themselves were in danger.

For example, a New York Times reporter captured the moment Trump was hit:

If you zoom in on the far left photo, you can see what appears to the trail of the bullet.

Even setting that aside, it is an amazing series of photos.

This from AP reporter Evan Vucci is Pulitzer Prize material.

    Amazing images! Seeing them I was reminded that for all the crap the Secret Service has been getting, they did actually use their bodies to shield Trump from further harm.

  2. gVOR10 says:

    As noted in your immediately previous post, Newt Gingrich is demanding Dems stop campaigning. Meanwhile Trump will be, probably quite literally, waving the bloody shirt. The electoral implications of this incident are very bad.

    Interestingly, one of the photographers also took an incredible photo of George Bush being attacked with a shoe during that press conference in Iraq.

    Getty always gets amazing shots. I’m sure they get preferred placement and that being able to capture thousands of images on digital (unlike the old days of having to buy, change, and develop film) has made it easier. But it’s remarkable how the shot I want is from Getty at least 2/3 of the time.

  5. Gavin says:

    Should be noted that Trump picked all the SecSvc based solely on their politics.. not their competence. You know, MAGA affirmative action.
    Allowing this to happen is the exact level of competence we can expect out of Project2025.

    I have thoughts and prayers for Trump. And now that I said the words, Republicans certainly will stop whining because we’ve done all that we can, right?

    It is interesting how so many sites keep cropping this iconic photo

  7. @JKB: I am not sure of your point.

    The crop you shared does not remove any relevant information and it does highlight the triangluar symmetry between the flag and whatever the pole is on the left. It also centers Trump.

  8. Mister Bluster says:

    JKB is referring to the halo above Trump’s head that only Trump’s devotees see being cropped out of the photograph.

    @Steven L. Taylor:

    I’ve seen so many sites used close up or “bit later” image seemingly to avoid the very good image.

    Here is an X post by someone who shows the composition elements the photographer got on the fly.

  10. Paine says:

    I’m still quite baffled that the SS agents would allow Trump to strike a pose like that as opposed to forcibly escorting him into the waiting vehicle.

  11. @JKB: I remain unclear on your point. Also: using different shots is not the same as cropping.

    5
  12. @Paine: I don’t think they allowed him to strike a pose. I think it is all a lot of chaos and movement in the moment. He appears to have stood up as they were ushering him off stage and he stuck his fist up. A photo. or even a series of photos captures a split second in time.

    @gVOR10:

    Newt Gingrich is demanding Dems stop campaigning.

    Democrats: “Well, if Newt Gingrich demands it…”

  14. Jen says:

    @Paine: That was surprising to me too. From everything I’ve ever heard (my father worked in the security field after leaving government service), the protective detail’s number one job is to make absolutely certain there’s no chance for a potential assassin to take another shot. I would have thought having Trump fully covered until he was secured off stage would have been the priority.

    @Jen: @<a
    I was surprised by this also, but even more surprised that when they finally did get him to the SUV that they didn’t use the cop move of shoving his head down and into the vehicle. It looks like he steps up on the running board (or similar), and his head goes up above the roof of the vehicle. 360 exposure of his head. Does not look like competent work to me (I say while settling deeper into my armchair)

  16. @Jen: We are, of course, all speculating, but part of the question would be if they had shot the shooter by the time Trump photoed as per the above.

    1
  17. gVOR10 says:

    @Steven L. Taylor: They likely had shot the shooter, but they couldn’t know there weren’t others. It still strikes me as sloppy.

    6
  18. @gVOR10: Yes, no, maybe. I just don’t think we can know and so caution people from guessing.

    Whether it is guessing the security detail was sloppy or anything else. We simply don’t know.

    1
  19. Jen says:

    @Steven L. Taylor: Exactly what gVOR10 said. Because one doesn’t know what is going on, the best bet is to get out of the situation ASAP with the principal covered and protected.

    ETA: and of course, this is all hindsight is 20/20 stuff. When I saw the video, my response was GET HIS HEAD DOWN AND COVERED, but easy to armchair quarterback.

  20. Just nutha ignint cracker says:

    @Steven L. Taylor: Sure. But it’s a lot more entertaining to make up conspiracies about the secret meanings of what we saw and how we imagine the picture X outlet used is inferior to the one we prefer–which absolutely, DEAD BANG (no pun intended) PROVES the media is biassed against our view.

  21. Bobert says:

    @Paine:
    Likewise, I was surprised that SS paused to pick up red maga ball cap.
    For someone who might know, did SS remove his shoes? Why were his shoes off that he wanted to pause to get his shoes?

  22. gVOR10 says:

    @Bobert: His shoe(s) probably came off when he went down because they’re not well attached. You can see in a shoe picture that the sole is wedged way up at the heel. I suspect he also has heel pads in the shoe, hence a weak grip on his heel. You may remember during his presidency there was a “mystery” about why he had difficulty on a down sloping ramp. Because of his lifts he was overbalanced on the ramp and ended up awkwardly jogging. This is one of his little dominance tricks. And he’s sensitive enough about it that he made sure someone hustled his shoe(s) out of sight. He’s going to be very unhappy if some of the pictures from the incident with his hair pushed back, revealing his bald pate, are widely seen.

  23. CSK says:

    @JKB:

    Cropping how, exactly? I’ve seen this countless times.

  24. Gavin says:

    Aside from Trump increasing his ankle flexion to sink deeper into his high bar back squat, what is gained by having heel lifts?

  25. Jen says:

    @Gavin: Just like heels that women wear, it makes him appear taller. He’s always been self conscious about his height and it’s long been suspected that he wears lifts.

  26. Matt says:

    @Gavin: The same reason some men wore heels back in the day. Gotta eek out that extra height to appear all manly and shit. Codpieces weren’t enough apparently.

    Since he is not riding horses or an ancient world butcher or whatever..
