NYT, “Vance Says He Hopes His Wife Embraces Christianity, Setting Off Backlash.” tl;dr: There’s apparently such a thing as evangelical Catholicism.
Graeme Wood, The Atlantic, “Why the Gaza Peace Deal Is Like an Anglican Wedding.” tl;dr: It hinges on “do all in your power to uphold these two persons in their marriage.”

@Gregory Lawrence Brown: I haven’t read that article, but I read something else that also reported that quote, and what it means is that he hopes that one day she will embrace Christianity. She doesn’t now.
“Do I hope eventually that she is somehow moved by the same thing that I was moved by in church?” he said during an event at the University of Mississippi on Wednesday, in response to a question from the audience. “Yeah, I honestly do wish that because I believe in the Christian Gospel, and I hope eventually my wife comes to see it the same way.”
The Right, including Vance, is now talking about “heritage Americans“. Nothing Usha does can make her a heritage American, or a heritage Christian. Vance knows, but will not say, that for the Right “Christian” is a tribal identifier, and Usha will never be a member of the tribe.
Before he ever thought about entering politics Vance dug a hole for his future self and now he’s doing his poor best to hand wave and bullshit his way around it.
You may recall that Vance was once touted as a future Dem aligned political hope, but he made the cynical choice to become a MAGAt. As a Dem, Usha would be diversity forward credibility, as a MAGAt, she’s a boat anchor. He’s enough of a weasel to dump her and let his minions spread the rumor that the reason was she wouldn’t become a Christian.
Yup and they’re persistent too.
I can’t read the paywalled NYT item to get the context of this quote. So my question based on the information that I have: He doesn’t know?

And no, this won’t fly well in certain circles.

One fine day in the near future, one of their children will denounce their mother to the secret police, and she will be deported or shot.
On that day, Vance will beam with pride that his spawn are real, patriotic Americans.

@Jon:
Thank you for the replies.
Is there subtext to this link?
Because I can certainly see subtext(s), some more sub than others.
But perhaps it is simply a cigar.
@Mimai:
Walks or the Vances?
@Kurtz:
Walks. The Vances are too on-the-nose.
