[Updated] Site update: Slowly working on lag

Niagara falls...

Quick update: We’re aware of the lag issues and are working on them. Yesterday, we tried a server reset, but that did not appear to be a lasting solution—ditto reenabling caching. The next step is to make sure it isn’t a PHP issue. Provided that update doesn’t work, I’ll move on to testing our plugins.

If it reaches plugin testing, the site will probably appear unusual for a while. So if things look weird–no need to panic. Or, if you do have to panic or want to test things, here’s the post comment thread for you to let loose in.

[AM Update] I’ve also discovered there are some core server updates that need to be run, so that will be slowing things down for a bit as well.

[PM Update] We are now running for the next few hours with no plugins activated to see if that will correct the issue we have seen. We’re off the map and things will be weird. Note that some usual commenting features will not be accessible for a bit. Once things are stable, I’ll start adding them back in.

Something I’m not concerned about at all (like the rest of the site problems) but will bring up in case it’s important is that upvotes are very slow to register and sometimes fail to post at all. (I’m a “you never know what will prove to be “the” problem” guy in my approach to troubleshooting.)

Just as a total tangent, the “Niagara Falls” episode of the Three Stooges (the actual title is “Gents without Cents”) is one of their best. (And I know the routine wasn’t original to them, but it’s the best version of it I’ve seen.)

    Hopefully, it will get up.

Seriously, thanks for your efforts, Matt.

    @just nutha:..upvotes

I discovered at least a year or so back that the upvote is about as reliable as an election in the former Soviet Union.
I have been able to give myself an up vote when I make a post.
Considering fairness and accuracy I don’t do it except to demonstrate the action.
Like in my “check” post above.

I’m sorry to say that OTB has been really bad late this afternoon. It took me about 20 minutes just to get access.

  11. CSK says:

    Wow, it’s much better now.

Whoa. Been bad lag, then this came up in a flash. iPhone, current iOS, Safari, two bars 5g. Do appreciate all your work to maintain the site.

Hopefully we will get those commenting plugins up and running soon.

The like, reply, and edit buttons appear to have vanished. And I have to type in my user name, which is no biggie, but odd.
