I have a new piece up at Liberal Currents: Checks and Balances Will Not Save Us.

The main thesis:

Unfortunately, checks and balances are not coming to save us. Will a Democratically controlled Congress have some tools to deploy? Some, but not as many as some may hope.

  1. Depressingly accurate.

My fear for the next Dem congress, is that they waste time on pointless investigations that will go nowhere and eat the congressional calendar. The second fear is that they will simply revert to promoting the standard Dem legislative agenda.

A better path, in my view, would be to ID a dozen or so popular issues and pass legislation to address the voters concerns. Some can be passed through reconciliation like taxing the rich and restoring healthcare subsidies etc. Others will require blowing up the filibuster, like court reform. Pass the legislation make the felon veto it and force R’s to vote to uphold the veto at their political peril.

    1. I don’t know that investigations are meaningless. Impeach Hegseth over incompetence, and not safeguarding the troops with the insane deployments at sea.

Make Republicans defend an unpopular war of choice being run incompetently. Are they willing to go to the mat for the shithead? Or do they break with Trump?

Do they want to support RFKJr? There’s very clear perjury in his confirmation hearings and his conduct on the job.

      Clarence Thomas for taking bribes?

Remember, “high crimes and misdemeanors” is deliberately undefined, and impeachment is a political act. The House and Senate don’t have to abide by the Supreme Court rulings that bribery is only bribery when all parties get a notary to put their seal on a document saying that it is bribery.

People hate corruption and incompetence. Make the Republicans defend it.

  2. Well, reading you at the link certainly cheered up my morning. /s.

Math is a harsh mistress, and Congress rarely has the votes to counter-check the president by overriding a veto.

And the MSM will continue reporting that measure X failed in the Senate 55-45, not mentioning the 55 were FOR. If, miraculously, Dems get a Senate majority is it too much to hope they’ll eliminate the filibuster? Or at least revert to the old rules with a talking filibuster? If the GOPs want to block reform, make them stand up and say so. Yes, a talking filibuster prevents the Senate from tackling other business, but they’re not getting anything done now.

And I can’t see Schumer leading a reform movement. That’s going to have to change.

I will add my usual comment that Trump and the GOPs have screwed up everything they’ve touched. Structural issues aside, in a rational world GOPs would be polling at <20%. But here we are, hoping for a small majority in the House and a seat or two in the Senate.
