CBS News reports: Trump $1 coins go on sale from U.S. Mint, priced from $1.55 to over $2 each.

Although U.S. regulations permit only deceased people to appear on currency, the Trump administration has said that the president may appear on a coin under a 2020 law allowing new designs to commemorate the country’s 250th anniversary. 

On Wednesday, the U.S. Mint said the new coins may be used as legal tender, but also pitched them as collectibles.

The Trump coins are gold-colored but composed mostly of copper, with 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese and 2% nickel. No actual gold is used in the coins.

    Expecting people will want to pay more for a coin that’s in circulation, as if the act of paying more for it makes it a “collectable”? The stupid…it burrrns.

    Chief Justice Roberts issued an advisory ruling that while the issue of the coin was undoubtedly illegal, nobody had standing to challenge it.

      @Ken_L In fairness, Roberts dissented on the standing issue in the ballroom case.

        I am generally a guy who will go farther than most to see a whole person, the good with the bad. I was this way with John Roberts for a long time.

        Then came Trump v. United States, and also United States v. Skrmetti. Both decisions written by Roberts, both chock full of the worst legal reasoning I’ve ever read, understanding that I’m not a lawyer. (Well, ok, it’s possible that the opinion that Alito wrote in Dobbs is worse.)

        Roberts does not give a fair break to me and mine, so he isn’t going to get one either.
