Via ESPN: Sources: Trump wants Commanders’ new D.C. stadium named for him.
A senior White House source said there have been back-channel communications with a member of the Commanders’ ownership group, led by Josh Harris, to express Trump’s desire to have the domed stadium in the nation’s capital bear his name. The new stadium is being built on the old RFK Stadium site that served as the team’s home from 1961 to 1996.
“That would be a beautiful name, as it was President Trump who made the rebuilding of the new stadium possible,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told ESPN on Friday night via email.
Leavitt declined to answer additional questions, but the senior White House source told ESPN: “It’s what the president wants, and it will probably happen.”
On one level, this is just Trump doing the trumpiest thing imaginable, wanting his name on everything. The more energy he spends on Mar-a-Lagoing the White House (see photo at the top), the less energy he is spending on doing more serious damage.
On another level, however, this is just a grotesque display of a narcissist who sees the presidency as a plaything. His ego is both so large and so fragile that he is willing to lobby for, if not strong-arm, his way into getting a stadium named after him. There is no doubt the ballroom will bear his name. And I do think that if he could find a way to put his face on Mount Rushmore, he would.
This is all petty dictator stuff.
The obsequiousness from the Press Secretary is just icing on the cake.
Along those lines, let’s throw in his ongoing fantasy that his cabinet would behave like Xi’s.
