Back in early September, I noted that Trump Is Making the Midterms About Trump and that I thought that was good news for all of us who want the GOP repudiated for its support for the authoritarian in the White House. I maintain that if one is pro-democracy, one has to be anti-Trump and anti-Republican this November.
While the real test of this theory (and the corollary that Trump is making things worse for his party by holding his rallies) will be the results of the elections, the evidence continues to mount in favor of the hypothesis in question. To wit, Politico reports: Poll: Trump is mobilizing more Democrats against him than Republicans for him.
New results from The POLITICO Poll show that Democratic midterm voters are more motivated to oppose the president than Republican voters are to support him. Many Republican voters also aren’t looking for blind loyalty to Trump in the midterms: Half say they’d rather their local candidate aim to win, even if it means speaking out against the president.
[…]
Even Trump’s endorsement of a Republican candidate seems to influence Democrats more than Republicans: Roughly 70% of Democratic midterm voters say his endorsement would make them less likely to support a candidate, compared to 55% of Republican midterm voters who say the endorsement would make them more likely to support a candidate.
The numbers show a lot of unbalanced outcomes, where Trump hurts more than he helps. One upshot of this is that if GOP candidates could focus solely on their local race, they would be better off; but when the race is made about Trump, that makes their situation more difficult.
Or, you could be so lucky as to have Trump show up to rally for you, only to have to concede that you are going to lose.
I mean, I say: go campaign for them all!
