  1. We’re packing up and headed back north today, so likely no posting from me today. Happy 250, all.

      1. @steven Thanks! We made it home in record time. I don’t know if it’s because of the holiday, the heatwave, or what but this was the first time we didn’t hit massive traffic multiple times.

  2. Happy Independence Day, all!

According to a Cato Institute poll, nearly half of Americans surveyed don’t know what the 250th is celebrating.

    Sigh.

And, tonight’s fireworks display in DC is going to shoot off more than 850,000 fireworks. A typical display is 20,000. This is ridiculous, and completely unnecessary. JFC. There will be so much air pollution that doctors are recommending those with cardiovascular issues leave the area.

    1. That tracks with the general over-the-top nonsense that is DJT.

  3. Happy 4th, everyone. Remember all the good things and remember how truly lucky we are to be here at this place and at this time.

    Tomorrow is another day.

  4. My genealogy site just informed me that a signer of the Declaration of Independence, Edward Rutledge, is my 1st cousin, nine times removed.

    Take that, Heritage Americans!

  5. My wife and I just got back from Fort McHenry, where we bought a flag and were able to hoist it on the Star Spangled Banner flagpole. Then we stayed while one of the Rangers (who is a high school history teacher in the off season) give a moving version to the crowd about how the flag came to symbolize the nation, and not just the government. Then a hundred or more people came forward and helped to raise the garrison flag, the one “so big the King can see it from England”. It is truly immense. They started hauling people’s 3×5 flags up and down while it was flying and they were barely as tall as one stripe, maybe just big enough to cover one of the 15 stars

  6. Happy birthday to youuuu!
    Cool new look!

I’m back from holiday, and the world does not seem to have recovered it’s sanity while I was away.

You picked a good time to go on vacation because nothing has happened in foreign policy. Nothing, I say.

      1. The Straits are open.
        The Straits are closed.
        Repeat on a loop …

Meanwhile in Washington, Trump is losing the War on Algae.
        wtf?
Meanwhile in London, Starmer is replaced by Burnham who will do … things.

I think I need another holiday.

          The Strait is clopen.

  7. I woke up today in a foul mood and fully ready to hate the day. However Charlie Pierce rescued me with his Saturday email post. He begins by complaining about the mindless spectacle coming this evening and about not liking a 250 year celebration as a milestone, “… my basic ambivalence toward these things is my fundamental feeling that they’re all half-loafs of history. Centennials are round. They are complete. They are easily understood.” Good on ya, Charlie, feed my mood. But then, “In 1976, Gerald Ford was president, and he had the Captain and Tennille sing “Muskrat Love” for Queen Elizabeth, which is the worst thing an American leader did to a British sovereign since Yorktown.” My coffee came out my nose with that.
Bless Charlie for that and Happy Fourth to all of you. See you at the local baseball game.
