More Danger in Pakistan

In addition to all of the news of demonstrations and riots in Pakistan there are reports coming out of at least one and possibly two American soldiers having been killed in Pakistan today:

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – Militants opened fire Monday on a convoy carrying U.S. and Pakistani military officials near the Afghan frontier, killing one American and one Pakistani soldier, the Pakistani army spokesman said.

At least two Americans and two Pakistani soldiers and were wounded.

Maj. Gen. Waheed Arshad said “miscreants” — usually a byword used by Pakistani officials to describe Islamic militants — fired at the convoy carrying military officials who attended a meeting in the northwestern town of Teri Mangal.

Early reports were conflicting with stories of more American soldiers killed by Pakistani forces.

I don’t know what else we can infer from this story other than that Pakistan is a dangerous place, getting more dangerous very rapidly.

    And equipped with nuclear weapons.

    And equipped with nuclear weapons.

And has a fifty year history of on again off again war with their neighbor, who also has nuclear weapons now.

I don’t see where we really ahve any options in handling them though. We have no credible military power to project, we’re hated by the people who are inciting the violence. The government is corrupt and autocratic. Our only ally in the region is Pakistan’s hated enemy.

Rather leaves us out of options.
