Via Axios: Susan Collins opposes Todd Blanche for attorney general.
As usual, she is brave when there is no cost.
Collins’ vote won’t sink Blanche’s nomination on its own. But it makes every remaining undecided Republican that much more important.
Because, you know, she has concerns.
“While I believe Mr. Blanche is a capable lawyer, the Department of Justice has become increasingly political,” Collins said in a statement.
“Mr. Blanche has taken several actions that have further eroded the Department’s independence, and that is the basis for my vote to oppose his confirmation.”
The move is predictable, yet still interesting insofar as it does indicate that he is concerned about her reelection and will try to show her vaunted “independence” via such votes. She will defy Trump, don’t you see! Just pay no attention to the fact that her defiance is of no real consequence!
The good news that I can service from this is that at least she thinks she has to appeal to voters to keep her job.
