  1. Suppose one fine day when people finally, at long last, develop commercial scale fusion reactors, someone notices a tiny discrepancy in the energy output in all of them. Nothing major, Like 0.00001% less energy than theory predicts.

Now, I know this is not so. We don’t have fusion reactors, but there’s small scale fusion that can be done in the lab, and we’ve had fusion bombs for decades. No discrepancies as far as I know.

But this is for a story. So suppose it’s real.

Ok. It’s not a major problem for producing usable energy, or for fusion used in spacecraft propulsion, not even for the big colony ships that manage 0.1 c interstellar travel. But it annoys scientists no end.

Eventually someone realizes the energy does get produced as theory predicts (yay!), except a small portion of it comes out in a form we can’t detect. Or couldn’t until some discovery in an obscure branch, kind of speculative, of multidimensional physics finds out a tiny amount of energy in every fusion reaction creates faster than light waves that leak to a different spatial dimentsion.

Why come up with something like this? Because I want FTL travel and communications in the story, and relativity makes it very difficult, even if it were possible somehow to move anything faster than light.

Ah, but if it already happens naturally, then Einstein’s theory of special relativity is incomplete. It’s still valid. it still works for most of the physical universe at every scale. Jus like Newton’s theory of universal gravitation is still valid even after general relativity changed things.

But the important thing is that in this fictional universe FTL travel breaks no laws of physics

    🙂

  2. On better news, the latest season of The Diplomat is out on Netflix.

It is far more interesting politics when competent people eff stuff up.

  3. Breaking from the NYT: Trump has canceled the plan to livestream the execution of Hasan.

  4. “If you’re focused on the outcomes, you’re missing the real work that’s going on,” a top Democratic policy mind involved in these efforts told me.

The radical Democratic plan to change the government for good

Well, this would be nice, but I won’t wager the deed to the house. Most likely Dems will fall into the old habit promoting their favorite programs than engaging in structural change.

Far more likely is Dr. T’s description of competing authoritarianism, where the next Dem prez abuses power in promotion of his/her policies just as the felon has.

  5. Just yesterday Trump referred to the excursion as a war. Again.

“We’re going to have that war done very quickly, and oil will be coming down, and they will never have a nuclear weapon.”

    Schrodinger’s war.

  6. “We’re going to have that war done very quickly …”

    Real soon now.

    1. This is just such arrant nonsense.

  7. LOL.

Accenture Tells Employees They Can Now Spend Only $29 on Claude Per Month

Consulting giant Accenture has told many employees that the company will now only spend $29 a month per person on Claude. Employees subject to the cap, some of whom had been spending as much as $1,000 monthly, are scrambling to find ways to make sure they can keep spending as much as they already are.

    1. This is why the Chinese open source model will predominate. Very few companies will need cutting edge AI and cost will be a determinant in choosing what to use.

Unlike the software space where open source was an option long after the Microsofts, Oracles and Apple were well established, open source AI is developing near leading edge capabilities only months after OpenAI, Athropic etc.

    2. Seem like tokenmaxxing was one short lived corporate fad after all.

      @Sleeping Dog

I wonder how much it’s the model used, and how much the compute behind it. You can download any open source code and run it, but how will it do on a PC or a corporate server farm vs a data center?
