I stumbled onto an actual use case for LLMs.
Now and then if there’s little work to be done, I’ll entertain myself by chatting with an LLM. Whatever pops into my mind, like thrashing windows 8, reminiscing about old computers, the problems of space travel, etc. It passes the time.
The use case? It makes it look like I’m working 🙂
Anthropic reached a settlement with book authors Claude had ripped off. It was a pain the ass to apply for the pay-out but we’re talking 100 or so books, so I steeled myself to the task.
Then, I get two challenges. No explanation but I assume it’s about Michael Grant vs. Michael Reynolds. I figure I need proof that it’s just one guy: me. For proof, I ask Claude, then screenshot the result and upload that.
Argue with that, Anthropic.
To me, the mist worrisome thing about AI is what I’ve learned in this age of Trump: most people are entirely satisfied with something that merely sounds true, and will not bother challenging it before they take even irreversible actions. As an example: here’s an analyst who used AI to generate intel that turned out to be hallucinations and then used AI again to package it into a profressional looking report. We actually got as far as scrambling a warship to seize and board a Chinese ship, an act of war, before someone decided to dig deeper.
New house, old smoke alarms plus new smoke alarms from ADT. In the middle of the night we get the chirps. I assume it’s one of the legacy alarms. Unable to climb ladders at 3 AM with a fucked-up hip (sorry to lay that medical jargon on you) I knock the goddam things down with my stout cane, one by one, and throw them from the balcony into the pool.
But it’s not one of the old alarms. The un-locatable chirping continues until I knock down the new ADT alarms and throw them in the pool. Six smoke alarms lie silent at the bottom of the pool.
@Michael Reynolds I can not count on a single hand the number of times I have been awakened in the middle of the night by a chirping smoke detector. This, despite them being hard-wired and being diligent about changing the 9-volt batteries (a giant pain in the ass) twice a year.
I do not have a pool, but have certainly thrown more than one of them to silence them.
Via Political Wire, Cook reports,
It also finds an electorate eager to see a new Congress do more than simply hold President Donald Trump to account, but also to make fundamental changes to the political system.
How are they going to do that over the filibuster, Dimbulb’s veto, Dimbulb’s DOJ, and the Federalist Court? And in two years GOPs will once again collect piles of money and run against the deadlock they’ve created. And the box-of-rocks electorate will buy it, “We gave those socialists two years and still no rainbows and unicorns. Throw the bums out, we gotta try something different.”
Well, the Houthis seem to believe in pouring flame on oiled waters.
They’ve hit Riyadh with ballistic missile strikes.
Which also indicates the Saudi anti-missile defence of Riyadh is pretty poor.
Perhaps due to prioritising the Gulf coastal areas, perhaps just general Saudi incompetence.
The problem is the current Houthi terms for a peace deal are intolerable for KSA: essentially they are demanding the Saudis bankroll their government.
otoh the Saudis seem to have little appetite for a direct ground intervention, and neither do any of their major allies.
Certainly not to step in while the Saudis stay out.
