I’m starting to see political ads on YouTube – pretending not to be political ads, of course. For instance, there was the one where the guy was advertising a lecture about how American history showed that America was a Christian nation first and foremost.
And then there was the one that wanted to tell me what Communism was. All in the spirit of academic inquiry, of course.

I don’t really know. I’m sure that things like this will show up on Facebook. They depend on The Algorithm to choose people whom they think have favorable demographics and interests.
With me, I’m sure I’m chosen because I watch a lot of stuff about military history. That means I must be a potential right-winger, right?
I can’t say if streaming packages lean so heavily on The Algorithm. The small amount of time I spent watching Disney+ with ads suggested that they didn’t.

They definitely use an algorithm, but while YouTube and the like tend to be viewed by one person at a time, the streaming services are far more family-centric. And that means the ad placement has to be much more cautious.
There would likely be backlash if Disney showed little Timmy some Holocaust denier propaganda before the latest episode of Marvel Whateverman. There’s a much greater chance that the parents will be there watching with Timmy.

Coincidentally I am Chautauqua this week and the lecture series and interfaith talks are on the founding of the country, including the role of religion and faith. Ken Burns, Jeff Rosen and others including a Jefferson scholar. Very educational and the speakers were very good and lots of stuff I didnt know, especially focusing on the Declaration of Independence. As an example, they really blew up the idea that the founders didnt know that slavery was wrong, that they were just acting according to the morals of the times. They knew it was wrong, they just didnt want to give up the money.
On the religious issue as I think most of us know there were many deists in the group of founders and they came from a diverse group of religions if they belonged to a specific faith. Jefferson and others were quite insistent upon a wall between the state and religion.
As an aside, the Jefferson guy had a great quote. “If you hate Jefferson you need to read more Jefferson. If you love Jefferson you need to read more Jefferson.” Other great quote from Ken Burns who noted that at the time of the revolution many people thought Washington was the richest person in the country. He noted that from 1775-1783 he was constantly on campaign and spent only 3 nights at home. So he asked, “could you imagine the richest guy in our country now being willing to make such sacrifices for the country?”

To add to Adolf’s Xtraship woes, this substack issue looks at how many Xtarship tankers will it take to fuel one Xtarship depot with liquid oxygen and liquid methane.
I knew about boil-off, but I didn’t know it was this bad.
So, no wonder Apollo used non-cryogenic hypergolic fuels for the service module’s main engine, as well as for the lunar module’s descent and ascent engines. All liquids boil off, but these do so at temps above freezing, not well below it. TL;DR: it’s easier to insulate them and prevent boil-off.
Of course, they don’t pack as much energy as cryogenic fuels. But I’d trade weaker thrust that can bring you back home than stronger thrust if you’d had any fuel left.
I’ve had doubts about the Xtarship design all the way back when it was the Big Effin Rocket, long before Adolf went nuts. Now I wonder whether it won’t end up as the Texla Xybertruck of rockets. That is, bad compared to the terrible Soviet N-1 lunar rocket.
Anyway, if a Xtarship depot is eventually launched, and fueling missions eventually follow, it would pay to track the depot throughout with a telescope and a camera, to catch the spectacular detonation should it ever blow up.

My daughter humorously boasted of her self-restraint exhibited in not keying a Cybertruck parked next to her.
After a bit of humorous banter, I suggested that she carry a bit of soap or something like it, and take any opportunity she could to write, “I Vivian”* on any Cybertruck she could see. (On the windows in preference). This does not actually do damage, so she is very unlikely to face charges of vandalism.
And, she said, if the owner decides to rock it, good on them!
*Vivian is the name of Musk’s trans daughter

TL;DR: women marry Russian soldiers and collect a few million rubles when they get killed in the war.
Two things stand out:
In one widely reported “black widow” case last year, a nurse working at a military hospital was fired after being accused of marrying five soldiers in her care before they succumbed to their injuries in order to collect their death benefits.
In one case last year, Russian media reported on an investigation in Primorsky Krai, in the country’s far east, into an alleged scheme involving a warrant officer, a sergeant and a military accountant. The three were accused of recruiting vulnerable men, including orphans and people with no close relatives, and arranging marriages for them. The recruits were allegedly then sent to high-risk front-line positions where they were more likely to be killed in combat. There have been no public updates since on the case.
