Front Page Design Tweaks

Now with more recency bias!

As we’re all getting used to the recent major redesign of the site, it has become clear that some posts were cycling off the main page too quickly for desktop, laptop, and tablet users. While all posts are accessible through the category, author, and date archives, most regulars will engage via the home page.

To address this while making the Features (Open Forum, Ancient Geeks, Tab Clearing, and Photo for Friday) posts readily accessible, I reverted to having only five Latest posts at the top. But there are now 12 Recent posts right below the Features section. This puts a grand total of 17 of the most recent substantive posts plus the four latest Features at your fingertips. As I type, the oldest of these is from June 12, well past the point where active discussions are likely to be ongoing. If it turns out we need even more, it’ll be easy to add rows of four posts with a simple command.

  1. Good, makes sorting the read from new easier. Another thought, dating the links on the homepage.

The captcha, both at login and for each comment is irritating.

    Thanks for your efforts.

    1. @Sleeping Dog They banned us from sending or receiving emails until we installed CAPTCHA software. I’m seeing if they’ll let me get rid of it for commenting at least.

  2. Thanks for putting the number of the comments on the front page!
