Europe is broiling. Portugal, is not. 75 and partly cloudy with a nine mile an hour wind coming off the ocean. In Paris it’s going to hit 98 today – 98 with very damn little AC. Back in Vegas it will be 97, but with all the AC you could ever hope for, and more.
But we are trapped. Trapped by our fat pug who – lacking a functioning nose – would die in the cargo hold of a plane. So we have to get back to the States on Bark Air. From Paris. The last flight out, July 30th. Basically we’re Ilsa and Victor Laszlo catching that last tail dragger out of Casablanca. (The part of the Nazis is played by AIMA: Agência para a Integração Migrações e Asilo.)
To my own surprise, I miss Vegas. Or to be more specific, I miss a clothes dryer, a garbage disposal, reliable Amazon, and just the amazing convenience of the USA, a country optimized for ease of use. Also burgers, barbecue, real bacon, salads, Mexican food, Costco, California wines, Four Roses single barrel and marijuana.
One thing I don’t miss? Americans.

I don’t really see how that holds up, Scott.First, I never said I love America. And second, I didn’t say I hate Americans.
I enjoy many things about America, and many things about Americans. But I don’t have to be all-in, 24/7/365 on either. I can grow tired of either or neither or both. At the moment I’m tired of Portugal and Americans. I just ate some grapes because I like grapes, but now I’m tired of grapes.
I don’t live in a black and white world, I live in a world of variety and choices. I’ve mentioned more than once that I’ve lived in four countries, fourteen states, well over 50 domiciles, attended 12 schools in just ten years, and at various times walked away not just from jobs, but from entire potential careers in journalism, law, restaurant management and political media.
I don’t really fit into a binary worldview, it’s all spectrum to me.

The ceasefire continues, with more attacks on Iran on Saturday
This line strikes me as odd: “After retaliatory strikes on Friday, the US military said it would continue to enforce the shaky ceasefire with Iran…”
Do you enforce a ceasefire if you’re one of the combatants? It seems to me you abide by a ceasefire, or break it, but not enforce it. enforcing a ceasefire means a third party stands in between the combatants, like UN blue helmet troops for example.
