Trump is Corrupt and Dangerous, Say Majority of Registered Voters

Even his supporters think he’s a bad person.

Axios’ Avery Lotz (“Trump considered dangerous, corrupt by majority in new poll“) produces this helpful graphic based on a new Economist/YouGov poll*:

Bar chart displaying words U.S. registered voters use to describe Trump, including percentages for each descriptor and the corresponding opinions.

The survey consisted of “web-based interviews” with participants who “were selected from YouGov’s opt-in panel to be representative of adult U.S. citizens, screened for voter registration.” Appropriate weighting methods, described on the last page of the linked poll, were applied.

My initial guess was that the above was more-or-less reflective of Trump’s overall popularity with respondents. But not really. Some other findings from the same poll:

  • 41% voted for Trump, and 39% voted for Harris (the results were weighted to match 2024 results)
  • 36% described themselves as Republican, 34% as Democrat, and 22% as Independent
  • 27% described themselves as MAGA supporters, 64% as not
  • 58% disapprove of Trump’s job performance, with 40% approving (all strongly/somewhat combined)
  • 49% think the Republican Party is too extreme; 47% think that of Democrats
  • 50% think the Iran War was a mistake; 34% don’t

So, while 41% voted for Trump and 40% approve of his overall performance in office, only one (arguably) positive attribute (“bold”) polled that high. Even more shockingly, all but one of the negative qualities got a “does not apply” rating in the 20s or lower. The outlier, “racist,” only got a 29% “does not apply.” So, roughly half of the people who support Trump think he’s corrupt, dangerous, out-of-touch, cruel, and divisive, and a significant number think he’s also racist. To be fair, some of them have no opinion on those issues.

Hell, 27% of those polled described themselves as MAGA supporters, yet only 18% describe him as “steady,” 19% as “inspiring,” and 23% as “honest.” And more people identify as MAGA than refuse to say Trump is not corrupt, dangerous, out-of-touch, cruel, or divisive.

Make it make sense.

*Interestingly, Lotz beat The Economist, which paid for the poll, to the punch. Thus far, there’s nothing about it on their website. The most recent story about a You/Gov poll is dated the day before the survey began.

One response to “Trump is Corrupt and Dangerous, Say Majority of Registered Voters”

  1. 44% say “divisive” does not describe Trump.

    Fascinating. Disheartening.

The proximity to 47% who see the Democratic Party as “too extreme” may suggest that some portion of the former don’t see Trump as uniquely divisive.

But I do wonder if a lot of voters view taking a firm position on some issues as evidence of extremism.

Or maybe culture war advertisements and mentions of communism and/or socialism work well on those who make it a point to vote, but who otherwise take only passing interest to politics.
