LAT (“Trump suggests letting Iran ‘take out’ Los Angeles and San Diego at campaign rally“):

President Trump, speaking at a campaign rally Monday, suggested Iran could “take out” Los Angeles and San Diego — a comment that was possibly in jest but brought a quick reaction from leaders in California.

Trump said he wanted to “see a tremendous victory” in the November election, “’cause it verifies all the things we did. And again, remember, with the war it’s just artificial, it’s a little bit high.”

“It’s a small price to pay for keeping the world safe, keeping our country safe,” he continued. “They can take out a city, let ’em take out Los Angeles, let ’em take out San Diego. This is a very small price to pay.”

The crowd cheered.

[…]

Trump made the remarks during a rambling speech in which he said gas prices would be lower soon, touted his ouster of Venezuela’s dictator and made attacks on news outlets.

He was in Grand Island, Neb., encouraging residents of the deep-red state to vote as if he were on the ballot.

Trump is famously jocular and free-wheeling in his stump speeches. I’ve seen various clips of the “They can take out a city, let ’em take out Los Angeles, let ’em take out San Diego. This is a very small price to pay” sequence, such as this one from CNN. He doesn’t seem to be joking. He’s not smiling.

Thankfully, Iran does not yet have nuclear weapons, let alone the capacity to “take out” a major city on the West Coast. But, for the record, the deaths of 4 million Los Angelenos would be a very high price, indeed, to stop Iran from obtaining the ability to do that.

  1. Among other things, Trump and his audience probably fail to realize how much of the consumer goods purchased in the western half of the country come through the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. And how the transportation system has been heavily optimized to move goods from those ports and not others. With pretty high probability, that shirt that was sewn in Vietnam and sold in Des Moines entered the country through LA/Long Beach.

Of course, as I’ve long said, Trump really dislikes, even hates, almost all of the country west of the Mississippi River. During his first term, he had visited six foreign countries before he set foot west of the Mississippi. I’m sure he’s finding his current need to campaign there unpleasant.

As I noted yesterday, there is no indication that this war-of-choice with Iran has, or will, stymie their nuclear ambitions. In fact it has probably made their attainment of nuclear weapons more likely.

And Saudi Arabia and Germany(1) and anyone else who has noticed we don’t fwck with nuclear powers and/or used to think they were covered by the U. S. nuclear umbrella. One doubts Hegseth and Trump understand non-proliferation. Rubio probably does, but for political gain he’s happy not to.

    (1) Anybody but me remember “Telefunken H bomb”?

An 80 year old, physically exhausted, and mentally impaired guy who is asked to speak publicly every day is going to say some stupid sh*t. He gets in trouble when he goes off the teleprompter, and he goes off the prompter because he reads at a 4th grade level AND (per longtime speculation) he can’t see the words clearly because he is too vain to wear reading glasses. It’s more fun to riff. That said, his extemporaneous remarks underscore how uninformed he is on virtually all topics, and how bigoted and close-minded he is as a matter of course.
