  1. The Five Places You DON’T Want to Be When Society Begins to Collapse seem to be…everywhere in this country.

    1. Technically, I’m north of Boston so…maybe a bit outside of the splash zone?

I think “Phoenix exists in violation of thermodynamic common sense” is the most apt description I’ve ever read. My parents are essentially housebound for months at a time due to the heat. Between that and the water issues, I really wish they’d move, but they are in their late 80s (dad is nearing 90) and they aren’t going anywhere.

    2. Sheesh doomers. Next this guy will be next to a highway with a sign proclaiming that the end is near.

Put about five seconds thought into his premise and it falls apart.

      1. I can agree with you that none of those scenarios are immanent (though I moved from a state where the leadership borrowed the state pension funds and has argued the need to cut pensions ever since, so I can see how Illinois works in real life). I think denying the possibilities is shortsighted, tho.

      2. I read waayyyy too much post-apocalyptic fiction…I could probably add to the list without stretching a muscle.

    3. Even the promise land of the PNW is going to have a problem with refugees from the shithole parts of the country.

That’s why I support taking proactive measures to take care of the Idaho problem before it becomes our problem.

We already have them scurrying across the border to use our hospitals because they won’t fund their own, and their anti-abortion laws are causing an ob/gyn shortage there.

      1. Wyoming is suffering an OB/GYN crisis, and hospitals there are closing their labor and delivery rooms. One of the hospitals here in Fort Collins, CO (35 miles south of the WY border by interstate highway) recently announced an expansion, including 12 more labor/delivery rooms.

    4. Interior Mountain West either somewhat farther north or with enough additional elevation weren’t included. The all-time high temperature in Santa Fe, NM is 102F. In Fort Collins, CO 103F. In Cheyenne, WY 99F. All three are also notorious for low humidity (I have been known to tell friends in the Midwest and the South, “Man, it’s just miserably humid here today. Well, for Mountain West values of ‘miserably humid.’”). The all-time high at near-sea-level Portland, OR is 116F.

  2. Let me add a tab to the 5 places thing.
Erik Loomis expect violence over water in the U.S. very soon.
He quotes a deeply researched piece in Texas Monthly.

The report (by the intergovernment Regional Water Planning Group ) offered the weakest of excuses: “The Rio Grande RWPG chose not to plan for uncertainty or DWDOR [drought worse than the drought of record] on a regional scale at this time because forecasting tools have not been able to provide the resolution needed for water planning on a regional basis.”

    How very Republican.

    1. In most of the US places where the water resources will be ‘critical’ in the near future, an embarrassing portion of the water is used to irrigate alfalfa and corn for beef and ethanol plants. In my western state, 40-50% of all water diversions could be eliminated by getting ethanol out of the gasoline and putting everyone one a vegetarian diet.
